Step Up To Butchery

Karl Davies Family Butcher has been a familiar part of Gorseinon High Street for over 20 years. This well-established business has taken on a new member of staff.

Jordan (Joe) has successfully completed a 26 week Step Up work placement and graduated to a regular job.

Six months ago Jo described himself as shy, introverted and a loner but the experience has transformed him. An isolated, introverted young man has transformed into a more outgoing person who has found a role.

Joe says that… ‘Without a placement I would still be sat in my bedroom. I love earning money and have even sold my Playstation as I now have a social life’

Proprietor, Neil Watkins, was cautious when first approached by Project Workers about offering the chance for someone to gain real life work experience but has engaged with the Step Up Project, becoming an excellent placement provider.

Neil says…‘I was reluctant at first to do this but glad I did. Joe is a quick learner and has really come out of his shell’

“More people should help youngsters, I would definitely do it again’

Jo already seems like a fixture, helping out with orders and deliveries and many of the processed meats on sale, such as burgers and kebabs are now prepared by him.

The butchery trade isn’t for everyone, and there is still a lot to learn. but Joe’s ambition is now crystal clear;

‘I want to be a Butcher’
