Since the bike library opened in mid-2024 the library has received to date 92 bicycles from members of the public as part of our donation drives. Bicycles of all types and in different conditions have been donated saving 1,196KG of bicycle waste from landfill.
Through the project the bike mechanic has been able to repair 40 of these donated bicycles and they have been added to our free bike borrowing inventory. 14 more bikes have been donated to members of the community in need of a bicycle and the remaining donations are either awaiting parts, have been reused for parts, or broken down into components and appropriately recycled.
With several months of the project still to go and donations being received on a weekly basis. We envisage this number to continue to increase and the project demonstrates the importance of having a suitable and viable way to donate unwanted bicycles as well as a commitment from the public to donate old bicycles in a more responsible way when provided with the opportunity.

Any bikes that can’t be repaired are broken down into component parts for reuse. Parts in good condition can then be used to repair other bikes, not only does this save money on buying new parts but saves useful items from going to landfill. Over 27 bikes have been repaired in this manner without the need for new parts.”
