Job Role: Gardener/ Gardening Instructor
Responsible To: Head of Operations
Contract Type: Fixed Term until 30th April 2028
Hours: 10 hours per week (3 days - Monday, Wednesday & Saturday) PLUS Additional Adhoc sessions – 1 week (35 hours) every 6 weeks

Place of Work: Lord Arthur Rank Centre & Community Garden
Salary: Real Living Wage - £13.45 per hour

The Project

You will be responsible for the Environmental Learning Hub and the Eat Grow Thrive Project which are two projects based at our Community Garden at the Foothold Cymru Enterprise Park in Llanelli. 

Job Purpose

Maintain and develop the Foothold Cymru Community Garden while teaching participants practical gardening and horticultural skills.

Encourage environmental awareness, teamwork, confidence, and healthy lifestyles through hands-on gardening activities.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

• Maintain gardens including flower and vegetable beds and outdoor spaces within the Community Garden.
• Promote sustainable gardening practices, biodiversity, and environmental conservation.
• Organise seasonal gardening sessions and activities with consideration of weather conditions.
• Ensure the safe use and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment.
• Plan, prepare and deliver practical and knowledge-based horticulture sessions.
• Teach practical horticultural skills, including planting, sowing, pruning, watering, composting, and seasonal garden maintenance.
• Experience of cooking seasonal produce, with groups; indoor and outdoor.
• Support participants in developing confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
• Monitor participants' progress and provide encouragement and feedback.
• Maintain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment.
• Work with colleagues, volunteers, schools, and/or community organisations where applicable.

Person Specification

• Practical experience in gardening or horticulture.
• Knowledge of plant care, soil management, and seasonal gardening.
• Experience working with or teaching young people.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to motivate and inspire learners of different abilities.
• Good organisational and planning skills.
• Understanding of health and safety in outdoor environments.
• Relevant horticultural qualifications (desirable).
• First Aid and safeguarding training (desirable or training will be provided).
• DBS (required, will be provided).
• Basic ICT skills (desirable) including preparation of documents to support the sessions if required.
• Ability to work flexibly and in a team environment.

Job Role: Bike Mechanic/Trainer

Hours:    4 hours per week Plus 45 x 6-hour ad hoc sessions (year one only)

Out of hours/after school working and weekends required.

Place of Work: Lord Arthur Rank Centre & Llanelli Area
Salary: Real Living Wage - £13.45 per hour

The Project
You will be responsible for providing bike maintenance and instruction to young people for our two new bike projects:

• Our Llwynhendy Mobile Bike Library which comprises of 45 x 6-ho ad hoc sessions spread across 1 year providing repair café services at the Canolfan Llwynhendy in Llanelli. 
• Pedal Power our youth led bike training project based at the Bike Library workshop at the Lord Arthur Rank Centre in Llanelli.

Job Purpose

We're looking for a Bike Mechanic to join our team, playing a key role in our mission to promote cycling and reduce waste. You'll be responsible for managing our workshop-based bike library at LAR and our mobile bike library.

This will include repair cafes where general repairs are provided to participants bicycles and basic bike maintenance repair teaching sessions for young people.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

•    Bike Repair Cafes: Diagnose and repair customer bikes in a welcoming and efficient manner, providing exceptional customer service.
•    Maintenance Classes: Design and deliver engaging and informative classes to empower individuals with basic bike maintenance skills.
•    Inventory Management: Maintain accurate stock levels of parts and tools, placing orders as needed.
•    Technical Expertise: Stay up-to-date on the latest cycling trends and technologies, providing expert advice to customers.
•    Community Engagement: Promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation and contribute to a vibrant cycling community.
•    Maintain records of numbers of participants assisted in the repair cafes.

Person Specification

•    Proven experience as a bike mechanic with a strong understanding of bicycle components and repair techniques.
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, providing exceptional customer service in a diverse and inclusive environment.
•    Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
•    Passion for cycling and a commitment to sustainability principles.
•    Experience teaching or leading workshops is a plus.
•    Experience working with young people is a plus but not required. 
•    First Aid and safeguarding training (desirable or training will be provided). 
•    DBS (required, will be provided).
•    Basic ICT skills (desirable) including preparation of documents to support the sessions if required.
•    Driving License (required) – to drive the mobile bike library.
•    Ability to work after school hours and weekends is required for this role.
