Showcase - Heol Goffa Work Experience Placement
Foothold Cymru was delighted to host a group of pupils from Heol Goffa as part of a work experience placement recently.
The aim of the placement was to develop practical horticultural skills, build confidence, and support personal development through structured outdoor activities.
During the placement, pupils engaged in a range of activities at the Foothold Community garden:
• Planting and maintaining flower, herb, and vegetable beds
• Watering, weeding, and clearing pathways
• Composting and learning about sustainability
• Supporting general upkeep of the garden areas
• Basic plant care and understanding of growth cycles
• Safe use of gardening tools
These tasks provided routine, structure, and opportunities for teamwork, pupils also gained other skills such as practical, personal and social skills, for example:
• Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently
• Improved communication with staff and peers
• Teamwork and cooperation
• Problem-solving and decision-making
• Increased resilience when attempting new tasks
Following the sessions, Heol Goffa commented:
“It has been noticeable with the pupils the increase in confidence. Many who were initially hesitant now take initiative, communicate more openly, and show pride in their work. Independence has also grown, with pupils demonstrating greater responsibility during sessions. Foothold Cymru has been highly effective in supporting the development of Heol Goffa pupils.”
The sessions delivered had a positive impact on pupils’ engagement, behaviour, and readiness to learn. Staff have subsequently reported improved focus, motivation, and social interaction.
Learners have benefitted from hands-on experience in a supportive community environment.
